Working on an inventory of an estate recently, I got to know a family of German immigrants. I love their story so much, I wanted to share it. ....It was 1978 when a struggling young German sausage maker, his wife, and son moved to America with hopes of a more prosperous future. He had become a sausage maker while working at his great grandfather's butcher shop. The only problem was it was 1 of 12 shops in a small town with a population of only 8000. So when a visitor from Oregon stopped in and told him of an opportunity in Portland, he packed up his family and sausage making equipment and left Germany in the pursuit of the American dream. They did not even speak English. By 1980, they had not only learned the language but also opened their own shop. For decades, he made the sausage in the back and she ran the shop in the front. They did very well and were loved by the community they served. While I never met them, I am so impressed and proud of them and am reminded how blessed I am to be an American. So Happy Birthday America and long live the American dream, an inalienable right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
